Fourth win for Hank McGregor at Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic

Fresh from his Maui Jim Molokai Challenge triumph in Hawaii, South African paddler Hank McGregor showcased exceptional ocean skills, securing victory at the Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic. This event, the inaugural leg of the International Canoe Federation's (ICF) new World Cup circuit, attracted a strong international field. Competitors faced powerful 25-knot downwind gusts across the 26-kilometer course, ideal for experienced surfski paddlers.

An elated McGregor described the conditions: "Conditions were pretty wild out there, it was super cool! There were some wide-eyed paddlers."

The title race was incredibly tight, with McGregor facing relentless pressure from Australian rivals Cory Hill and Michael Booth. Fellow South Africans Jasper Mocké and Barry Lewin also remained strong contenders.

McGregor made his decisive move in the final two kilometers, as the course entered the infamous Le Morne Pass, transitioning into a grueling headwind battle to the finish.

He explained, "I managed to get a lead going into the point, and managed to keep it at about three hundred metres all the way to the finish." Expressing satisfaction, he added, "I am really happy to win a fourth Investec Mauritius Ocean Classic."

This victory marked McGregor's fourth consecutive win at the picturesque Indian Ocean event, successfully defending his title. The men's podium mirrored the previous year's results, with Hill and Booth securing second and third.

In the women's category, Australia's Wendy Reyntjes claimed the top spot, narrowly beating defending champion Michelle Burn of South Africa. Hayley Nixon, also from South Africa, finished third.

However, Nikki Russell was disqualified despite crossing the finish line in second. Race officials cited a rule violation for cutting across the reef during her final approach.
