Finding community and resilience through paddlesports after cancer

The "Roses en Baie" association, a group of French women, transforms breast cancer recovery through shared experiences and paddlesports. Despite immense challenges, these women find joy and camaraderie, demonstrating community's profound power.

Strength in Unity and Shared Purpose

The core philosophy of Roses en Baie, 'Roses in the Bay', is built on collective strength. They believe uniting helps confront breast cancer's impact, offering mutual support and open dialogue during difficult times.

Formed in October 2013, the group was inspired by a TV story about breast cancer survivors competing in Venice's ‘Vogalonga’ regatta. They easily found enough women in Granville to form their own dragon boat crew.

Today, Roses en Baie has 74 members, including those joining in solidarity. Laure Coulombier-Keenan, a founder, explains their unique connection: "Our unique connection is cancer and its treatment, but non-cancer patients also participate in solidarity." She notes the difficulty of losing members, recognizing themselves as "lucky survivors" but always aware of the "Sword of Damocles." To honor those lost, they maintain family contact and display photos during their annual 'Roses’ March' in October. The association warmly welcomes anyone affected by breast cancer.

Sport as Therapy and Community Support

Laure Coulombier-Keenan calls their activities a "much more affordable form of group therapy," stressing that physical activity is crucial for recovery from the start of treatment. She emphasizes that "sharing and solidarity are highly effective in boosting our morale and showing us that anything is achievable."

The group allows flexible participation. Discussions vary, with serious talks arising after concerning check-up news. Humor is vital, helping members gain perspective.
