Set in the same venue that hosted the ICF Canoe Racing World Championships 2024, the race will once again welcome athletes to warm Atlantic waters. Within just 24 hours of registration opening, top athletes from around the globe have already confirmed their participation. Among them is Gordan Harbrecht of Germany who returns to the same waters where he became 2024 world champion in. South Africa’s Kira Bester , who triumphed in Madeira last year and is the reigning world champion, will also be on the start line. She will line up alongside U23 world gold medallist Rosie Edwards of Great Britain, ensuring tough competition out on the water. The Madeira race will launch the new ICF Canoe Ocean World Series format, which will run across the entire year and connect major ocean races into a single international circuit. “This new format strengthens the international competition calendar, increases the visibility of Canoe Ocean Racing worldwide, and provides athletes with a pathway to compete against the best in the sport throughout the season,” said Marian Sarbu, Chair of the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing Committee. “By connecting some of the most prestigious races around the world into one international circuit, we are creating new opportunities for athletes to compete at the highest level while strengthening the global identity of our sport.” As the opening race of the World Series 2026, Madeira will set the tone for a thrilling season of Canoe Ocean Racing around the globe.
