Michele Eray vividly recalls her triumph at the inaugural ICF Ocean Racing Women's World Championship in Portugal in 2013. She remembers every detail of that race, where strategic navigation secured a narrow victory, just over a second ahead of Michelle Burn.

Following her 2013 gold, Eray earned a silver medal in 2015. Now representing the USA, she arrives in Hong Kong Harbour aiming for a third medal at the 2017 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships.

Experience versus conditions

At 38, Eray emphasizes her extensive experience as her greatest asset. She finds confidence in her preparation and expertise, particularly in challenging, downwind conditions, which she considers her forte. Her years of experience are crucial, especially when races become technical.

However, the calm forecast in Hong Kong presents a significant challenge. Eray, who trained for wind and waves, expressed disappointment, noting flat water favors raw strength and speed, typical of younger sprinters. Consequently, her tactics must shift, as these are not her preferred conditions.

She finds competing while working "harder," yet remains determined to podium.
