Durban's Marine Surfski Series continues with strong turnout and competitive racing

The second race of the 2016 Varsity College FNB Marine Surfski Series, the Borland Surfski Challenge, attracted over 250 paddlers to Durban. Despite the rain, participants enjoyed favorable ocean conditions, leading to an exciting evening of competition where Matt Bouman secured his second consecutive men's victory and Nikki Russell triumphed in the women's division.

Bouman dominates men's race

Matt Bouman of Epic Kayaks continued his winning streak, outpacing strong contenders Gene Prato and Wade Krieger. Bouman established an early lead, with Prato ultimately finishing second after Krieger encountered an issue with the shark nets. Bouman highlighted the high level of local talent, noting, "Durban is truly blessed with so many skilled paddlers. This series is also a fantastic way to prepare for the international season."

Russell claims women's title

In the women's category, Fenn Kayaks' Nikki Russell made a successful debut, securing her first win of the series. Hayley Nixon (neé Arthur) put in a strong performance to take second place, narrowly ahead of Donna Tutton, who finished third. Jenna Ward and junior Christie MacKenzie completed the top five.

Other race highlights

Zoog Haynes and Linton Hope once again led the doubles race, while Jason Ekstrand and Kerry Segal were the top mixed doubles team. In the 4km short course, junior Keaton Riddle claimed victory, and Calvin and Tamryn McKie won the short course doubles.

The next event, the Hansa Surfski Challenge (race three), is scheduled for Friday, January 22, at 17:30 at Marine SLC, Addington Beach. More information can be found at www.marineseries.co.za.
