Increased Stakes at ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships

Competitors gathering for this year's International Canoe Federation Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban, South Africa, will be vying for a significantly larger prize fund. The total prize money has been doubled to ZAR 200,000, equivalent to more than $11,500 USD, marking a substantial boost for the athletes.

Prize Pool Details and Record Participation

Scheduled from October 17 to 19, the Local Organising Committee made the decision to increase the prize pool from its previous ZAR 100,000. This enhancement was made possible through generous sponsorships and careful budget management.

• The champions in both the men's and women's single races will each receive ZAR 26,000 (approximately $1,500).
• Top performers in the Under 23 and junior categories for both male and female paddlers will be awarded ZAR 5,000 individually.
• The victorious mixed doubles team will take home ZAR 7,000.
• Junior and U23 mixed doubles crews are set to earn ZAR 2,000.

The event has also seen remarkable interest, with single surfski (SS1) entries surpassing the 500 mark, and 221 participants registering for the double surfski (SS2) races.

Race Director Colin Simpkins expressed his enthusiasm for the developments. "We are thrilled to announce the doubling of prize money across all World Championships categories," Simpkins stated.
