Dominant display by Rice brothers sets stage for upcoming world championships

Rice brothers dominate final World Cup event

South African siblings Kenny and Sean Rice delivered a powerful performance at the third and concluding 2017 World Cup event in Breizh, France, securing the top two positions. This impressive showing serves as a warning to competitors ahead of the upcoming ICF Ocean Racing World Championships.

Race results and world championship qualification

In the men's competition, Kenny Rice outpaced his elder brother, Sean, by 55 seconds, with French athletes claiming the next three places. For the women's event, local favorite Angie Le Roux from France emerged victorious, followed by Spain's Amaia Osaba in second, and another French paddler in third.

These results finalized the top 30 male and female paddlers directly qualified for the world championships in Hong Kong. South Africa will send a formidable contingent of 13 male paddlers, including Sean and Kenny Rice, alongside several other top athletes. Several other nations, including France, Spain, Australia, Germany, Portugal, and Tahiti, also secured direct spots. With each nation allowed to nominate two additional athletes, South Africa could potentially have 15 competitors in Hong Kong.

Strong female presence expected

South Africa also expects a strong women's contingent, with ten athletes directly qualified. Notable qualifiers include New Zealand's Teneale Hatton, the reigning 2015 champion, and France's Angie Le Roux. Several other nations, including France, Portugal, Australia, Great Britain, Germany, Hungary, and New Zealand, also have qualifiers.

The 2017 ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships are set for November 18th and 19th, with final nominations closing this weekend.
