Despite cancellations, ICF board targets late 2020 competitions

ICF aims to resume international competitions in 2020

The International Canoe Federation (ICF) remains optimistic about hosting international canoe slalom, canoe sprint, paracanoe, and wildwater events before the year's end.

Upcoming events and safety measures

Events planned for late September, October, and November include canoe slalom world cups in Tacen, Slovenia, and Pau, France; a canoe sprint and paracanoe event in Szeged, Hungary; and an ICF wildwater world cup in La Seu, Spain. The ICF and local committees are developing detailed operational plans with COVID-19 safety measures to ensure the well-being of athletes, coaches, and staff.

Calendar adjustments and cancellations

Due to potential attendance issues from COVID-19 restrictions, the ICF board reclassified the non-Olympic canoe sprint world championships to a world cup for canoe sprint and paracanoe athletes. The board emphasized returning to competition for the sport and society, while prioritizing participant health and safety.

However, several major championships have been cancelled:

• The 2020 ICF ocean racing world championships in Portugal.
• The dragon boat world championships in India.
• The 2021 U23 and junior canoe slalom world championships in New Zealand.

Congress postponed; financial stability maintained

The ICF has postponed its 2020 congress, originally set for December in Manila, Philippines, now scheduled for March or April 2021. Despite the pandemic and numerous cancellations, the ICF reports a strong financial position. The situation is closely monitored, with cost-saving initiatives implemented as a precaution.
