Defending ICF surfski world champion Gordan Harbrecht prepares for new challenges

Germany’s Gordan Harbrecht, known as "Flash Gordan" for his speed, is a surfski athlete driven by continuous improvement. He eschews a traditional off-season, preferring consistent, moderate training year-round. "I am not a big off-season fan, probably because I enjoy kayaking," he states, highlighting a balanced approach that prevents burnout.

Despite having two young children, Harbrecht maintains an active family lifestyle, enjoying activities from skiing to camper van trips along the Baltic Sea. While acknowledging less personal flexibility, he embraces these changes, stating, "I wouldn't want it any other way."

A European Pioneer in Ocean Racing

The "Flash Gordan" nickname, given by Jürgen Brinks, became a source of pride, foreshadowing his historic achievement. In 2023, Harbrecht made history at the ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Madeira, Portugal, becoming the first European man to win the senior surfski title. This feat broke a decade-long dominance by Australian and South African athletes. He described the victory as "an overwhelming feeling and the culmination of years of hard work and dedication."

Harbrecht's ambition for surfski success remains undiminished. He attributes his achievements to unwavering consistency and a deep love for his sport, viewing his athletic lifestyle not as a sacrifice but as a passion. "Being an athlete and building my whole life around the sport I love most is probably the key to my success," he explains.

Embracing the German philosophy of "ganz oder gar nicht" ("completely or not at all"), Harbrecht is now focused on the upcoming ICF Canoe Ocean Racing World Championships in Durban, South Africa (October 17-19). He aims to defend his title, improve personal bests, and actively promote surfski in Germany, supporting other athletes through projects with Nordic Kayaks.
