Cory Hill defends ICF ocean racing world title in challenging Hong Kong conditions

Australian paddler Cory Hill successfully retained his ICF Ocean Racing World Championship in Hong Kong, navigating difficult race conditions and fending off a late surge from South Africa's canoe marathon world champion, Hank McGregor.

Hill established an early advantage and once again demonstrated his exceptional skill in large swells, maintaining his lead against a formidable South African team amidst 3-meter waves. Jasper Moche secured third place, just behind McGregor.

This victory adds to Hill's previous success, including his 2015 World Championship win in Tahiti under similar challenging conditions. He had also placed second at the inaugural World Championships in Portugal in 2013, behind another South African, Sean Rice.

Despite his prior world titles, Hill had not previously claimed a victory in Hong Kong, despite multiple attempts.

Hill's Reaction to the Win

Reflecting on the race, Hill commented, "Honestly, I didn't spot anyone for the majority of the race until we rounded Kissing Whales. That's when I realized Jaspar and Hank were right there. I actually saw two black boats and, with so many out there, I was confused about who it was."

He added, "I've had recurring nightmares about Hank; we've had intense battles coming in from Kissing Whales for years, and he's always managed to get ahead of me. So, that nightmare was playing in my head." Hill expressed his elation, stating, "It's just incredible to finally achieve this, to secure a win in Hong Kong and successfully defend the World Championship. It feels quite surreal, to be honest. A bit overwhelming."

McGregor's Perspective

McGregor admitted he believed he had an opportunity to overtake the Australian during the final stretch to the finish line, but ultimately found Hill too formidable. "It's never truly over until it's over, but he absolutely deserves this win," McGregor...
