Bouman secures victory, Purchase stages comeback at Lion of Africa Surf Challenge

The Lion of Africa Surf Challenge in Durban saw Matt Bouman claim his first Bay Union Surfski Series victory, leveraging ideal weather and exceptional surf skills. Junior Kyeta Purchase delivered a spectacular come-from-behind performance to win the women's title.

Representing Epic Kayaks, Bouman quickly led, distancing himself from teammate Wade Krieger (series' opening leg winner) and Luke Nisbet. Bouman built a lead on the downwind section towards the uMgeni River mouth, only to see it vanish upon turning back.

Bouman explained, "I chose a deep trajectory towards the top turning buoy, but its position was unexpected. Luckily, Luke Nisbet was behind me, but Wade Krieger independently headed directly for the buoy, negating our hard-won lead."

Organizers designed the Challenge to test surf handling, with a course featuring two markers in the surf zones of South Beach and Addington Beach. Bouman's superior surf command allowed him to break away, securing a commanding minute-and-a-half victory.

Bouman recounted the final leg: "Navigating a surf slalom around some rather startled flag-holders was quite enjoyable. My lead into the last turn afforded me the luxury of observing the battle for second." He praised Durban's high standard of surfski racing, noting its role in developing world-class talent.

Bouman noted Hank McGregor's absence (due to a family wedding) altered race dynamics. "Competing without the constant pressure Hank provides can sometimes make a race feel more challenging," he remarked.

In the men's race, Krieger narrowly beat Nisbet for second. Czech marathon specialist Jakub Adam recovered from a poor surf start to secure fourth, ahead of junior Bailey de Fondamiere.
