Bouman Triumphs Over McGregor in Thule Surfski Challenge

The recent Thule Surfski Challenge, a key event in the Varsity College FNB Surfski Series, reignited the intense rivalry between surfski legends Matt Bouman and Hank McGregor. In a significant and rare victory, Bouman surpassed McGregor, a formidable six-time Marathon World Champion, marking a memorable moment in their long-standing competition.

Their decade-long rivalry is known for its fierce yet mutually respectful encounters, with McGregor often holding the upper hand. However, Bouman's resolve was evident in this fiercely contested race. Reflecting on his win, Bouman shared, "These are the only races I really like winning; when everyone’s there racing." He specifically noted McGregor's participation as a major motivator, acknowledging the psychological advantage McGregor frequently possesses. "Hank has had the psychological edge over me though; physically we’re the same but in recent times he’s managed to manage me better," Bouman explained, crediting his success this time to a strategic change.

McGregor, despite recovering from a recent illness and not being at full fitness, offered generous praise for Bouman's performance. "Hats off to Matthew, he’s going really nicely at the moment!" he commented, also expressing his delight at returning to the Marine Surfski Series and the impressive number of participants.

Race Conditions and Other Results

The 8km course presented its own challenges, including a tricky wave near the shore, though the ocean itself was relatively calm, offering minimal assistance to the paddlers. In the men's long course, Wade Krieger, Luke Nisbet, and promising junior Bailey de Fondaumiere followed Bouman and McGregor to complete the top five.
