Bernardo Pereira's journey from Madeira's rugged shores to the elite international surfski stage showcases his dedication and deep connection to the ocean. A 23-year-old from Madeira, Portugal, he began paddling at six, inspired by his father. Despite local emphasis on sprint paddling, Pereira found his true passion in surfski, drawn by the freedom of the open ocean, its stunning views, exhilarating downwind runs, and abundant wildlife. This culminated in his 2025 surfski world championship, a testament to confidence, a supportive environment, and trusting the process.
Pereira emphasizes that major races demand physical and psychological strength. He trusts his team's work, believing his best effort means he's done everything possible. His 2025 world title is attributed to accumulated experience and consistent development, crediting a supportive team committed to his success.
Among his favorite surfski spots, Pereira highlights his hometown, Calheta, Madeira, for its constant swell. Internationally, he rates Sardinia and Lanzarote for exceptional downwind conditions. Villajoyosa is special for his first international medal.
Pereira implicitly trusts his equipment. His partnership with Nelo Kayaks began at 15 in 2018, with the Portuguese company believing in his potential. He uses the Nelo 62, valuing its comfortable seat and secure footrest. His paddle of choice is a Jantex model, used since childhood, making any other feel strange.
Outside of paddling, Pereira values relaxation, enjoying beach trips with friends and frequent travel. He remains committed to ocean paddling as long as his strength permits. A world champion at Junior and U23 levels, his ultimate goal is to become the Overall World Champion.
