Australians Hill and Smith leverage home advantage at ICF Ocean Racing World Championships

Australian paddlers Cory Hill and Jemma Smith aim to leverage their local knowledge at the ICF Ocean Racing World Championships in Perth, Western Australia. Hill, a two-time world champion, and Smith, the reigning titleholder, lead the Australian contingent tackling the 21-kilometer course from Fremantle to Scarborough Beach.

Men's Race

Cory Hill faces opposition from a South African trio: current world champion Kenny Rice, and marathon legends Hank McGregor and Andrew Birkett. Both McGregor and Birkett seek their first ocean racing crowns; McGregor finished second to Rice last year.

Hill, a multiple world champion and medalist, and fellow Australian Michael Booth's familiarity with Western Australian conditions offers a significant advantage. Other podium hopefuls include Australia's Mackenzie Hynard (bronze last year) and Germany’s Gordon Harbrecht (2021 silver).

Women's Race

Jemma Smith, 24, was the surprise 2023 world champion, triumphing over New Zealand's Danielle McKenzie and Michelle Burn in a dramatic Portugal finish.

While McKenzie is not competing, South Africa’s Burn will participate, aiming to add to her impressive tally of one gold, two silver, and one bronze from previous world championships. American Michele Eray, a past gold and silver medalist, is also a strong contender.

Event Updates

World titles will also be contested in under 23 and junior divisions for both men and women. Event organizers have adjusted the race schedule: surf-ski 1 races will now be held on Thursday, with surf-ski 2 races moved to Saturday.
