Kira Bester

Kira Bester is the current superstar of South African ocean racing. She has quickly evolved from a promising Under-23 athlete into the dominant force of the senior women's circuit globally. As of early 2026, she is the reigning two-time back-to-back ICF Ocean Racing World Champion.

The "Double-Double" World Champion

Bester’s rise is defined by a rare "double" achieved two years in a row: winning both the Under-23 and the Senior (Overall) Women's world titles in the same race.

  • 2024 Madeira (Portugal): Bester shocked the field by winning the overall women's title while still being eligible for the U23 category. She held off South African legend Michelle Burn by just 22 seconds in a grueling, tactical race.

  • 2025 Durban (South Africa): Competing on home soil, she successfully defended her crown. In a high-stakes battle through the Durban "runs," she defeated 2019 World Champion Danielle McKenzie (Richards) to secure her second successive world title.

The "Three Oceans in Seven Days" Feat

In 2025, Bester completed a whirlwind campaign that cemented her status as a global phenomenon. She won three major races across three different oceans in just one week:

  1. The Indian Ocean: Won the South African Surfski Championships (Simon's Town to Fish Hoek).

  2. The Atlantic Ocean: Won the Freedom Paddle (doubles race around Robben Island) with Melanie van Niekerk.

  3. The Mediterranean Sea: Traveled to Spain and won the ICF World Cup in Villajoyosa.

Technical Style: The "Orka" Engine

Trained as part of the elite ORKA Squad in Cape Town, Bester’s style is built on a foundation of scientific preparation and a deep connection to the water.

  • Tactical Maturity: Despite her young age (24), she is known for her "smart" racing. In her 2024 World Title win, she chose an inshore line that allowed her to navigate tidal currents better than her more experienced rivals.

  • Mental Resilience: She famously dedicated her 2025 World Championship win to her late coach and mentor, Peter Cole, pointing to the sky as she crossed the finish line in Durban.

  • Versatility: Like many South African greats, she is a multi-discipline threat, competing at a high level in Canoe Marathon and Sprint Kayaking, with sights set on the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
